I can see where within "Churchey" circles people would think this was funny....but to actually put it on the church sign is a real put-off. ...we should be about our Father's business....he was here to reconcile, heal and save- not poke jokes about people going to hell.
I just hate to see signs like that! My hubby and I rant about it every time we drive by one. I can't imagine signs like that make anyone want to become part of the church body.
A few Sundays ago as we were driving to church, which is almost an hour away, I had my head buried in a book. Suddenly I heard my pastor-husband say, "What in hell are you looking for?" My head snapped up and with a gasp, I said, "WHAT?? WHAT???? You have never talked like that to me before!! We've been married 39 years and you've never said anything like that to me, why would you talk to me like that???" He started laughing and said, "No! No....I was reading that church sign back there!" So of course I had to look at it on the way home. Sure enough that's what it said!! Apparently the pastor was preaching a series of messages. The next week the sign said, "What in hell do you want?" and then, "What in hell are you doing?" And...a few others. I couldn't believe they put that out there!
I'm sure I'm not the only one SHOCKED by that! I much prefer to see a Scripture on a sign board. God's Word is perfectly able to speak to a person's heart while they are driving by. In fact, many are blessed by it and it might just be the GOOD WORD that a person needs to hear.
Blessings to you as you serve the Lord in your community! Q.'
